Switched to working on George Saunders

Progress

Windrush. Fading away with memories that will be lost. It’s a history we should record. This is a blog of how my pieces are building.

As with the other quilts in the series George Saunders, a tailor who worked in Birmingham’s Back to Backs, is depicted with his clothes fading into the background while his face and hands remain in stark focus. It’s a deliberate choice, a visual metaphor for the passage of time and the transient nature of memories, and the gradual assimilation of culture.

The colours on his waistcoat are mostly done with stitch and just a light wash of neutral grey.  This takes quite a bit of time to do but I think I’m about half way through, and thought you might like to see progress on it.
